New Deck Brings The Garden Closer For Residents

The residents of Goyt Valley House care home, in Derbyshire, will enjoy the sunshine even more this summer thanks to their spectacular new garden deck constructed from American Southern Pine.

Previously the elderly residents could only access the garden via a long walk from the house or by using an indoor lift and there were no pleasant outdoor seating areas. Margaret Clayton – manager of the care home was keen for residents to enjoy the garden as much as possible but the existing access made it difficult.

Consequently, a deck area was commissioned by Derbyshire County Council, who owns the home, and the construction was carried out by Deckor Timber of Harrogate, using Southern Pine from sustainable US forests.

Bridget Sandbach of Derbyshire County Council said: “We chose to use Southern Pine for the new deck as we not only wanted an attractive deck but also one that would be cost-effective and last for many years to come. Southern Pine proved to be the ideal choice.”

The new deck opens out from the dining room, providing an attractive and safe outdoor area for the residents. The splendid raised deck measures 30 ft x 30 ft and features a pergola to provide shade, also big planters for green-fingered enthusiasts. Installing the deck has bridged the gap between house and garden, providing an ideal area for enjoying meals and relaxing in the sun.

Margaret Clayton said “We are really pleased with the finished results. The deck provides so many opportunities for everyone to enjoy the fresh air. We have even held a 100th birthday party there.”

Colin Young of Deckor Timber said: “Treated Southern Pine is by far the strongest and best softwood available for decking and we give all our decks a 75-year guarantee against rot and decay.”

Eddie Pearce, European Marketing Director for American Softwoods, said: “Southern Pine is renowned as ‘the supreme structural wood of the world’, due to its durability, treatability and design versatility. It has exceptional strength and is perfect for outdoor applications such as decking. Southern Pine also reacts extremely well to being treated. Preservative penetrates deep into the timber – unlike many other timbers that only allow limited penetration.”

Southern Pine is harvested from sustainable forests in the USA. The success of forestry management and conservation in the USA means that forestry land is now greater than it was 75 years ago. Forests occupy an area equal in size to Germany and France combined. More than 4.5 million trees are planted every day.
